AI Overviews
Last updated September 2026
AI Overviews is Google's AI-generated summary that appears above traditional search results for many queries, synthesizing information from multiple sources into one answer with citation links. Ranking well no longer guarantees a click if an AI Overview resolves the question before a user reaches the results list.
AI Overviews expanded from Google's earlier Search Generative Experience test into a standard feature across a large share of informational queries. It sits above the traditional ten blue links, drawing from several sources at once rather than pointing to a single top result.
01
How a page gets pulled into an AI Overview
Citation correlates strongly with pages that already rank well and are structured for easy extraction: a clear answer near the top, supporting structured data, and credible authorship. Google is not selecting from a separate pool, it is drawing on the same index and largely the same relevance signals that determine standard rankings.
02
What it means for click-through rate
- 01
Informational, how-to, and comparison queries see the steepest click-through effects, since the Overview often resolves the question fully
- 02
Transactional and local queries are affected less, since a purchase or a visit still requires clicking through
- 03
Branded queries are affected least, since users searching a known brand usually intend to land on that brand's site anyway
03
What agencies should track instead of rank alone
Monitor whether a client's pages appear as cited sources inside Overviews for target queries using Search Console's AI performance reporting, and treat that citation as its own KPI alongside rank. A number-one ranking that gets overshadowed by an Overview citing a competitor is a real loss even though the rank position on the page looks unchanged.
Conduit builds pages toward Overview citation from the start now: answer-first structure and schema are not optional finishing touches, they are part of what earns a citation instead of getting buried beneath an AI answer that quotes someone else.
Content that earns a citation in an AI Overview often sees reduced click-through even while gaining visibility, which is exactly why agencies need to reset a client's expectations about what success looks like in this channel. Agencies should track which of a client's target questions trigger an AI Overview at all, since not every query surfaces one, and that changes where optimization effort belongs.
