Off-Page SEO

Last updated September 2026

Off-page SEO is everything that builds a site's authority and reputation outside its own pages, primarily backlinks, but also citations, brand mentions, and reviews. It complements on-page and technical SEO by giving search engines evidence that other credible sources vouch for the site.

If on-page and technical SEO make a site clear and accessible, off-page SEO is what convinces a search engine the site deserves to rank above competitors saying similar things. It is built almost entirely on external signals: links from other sites, mentions of the brand, local citations, and reviews, none of which the site owner fully controls.

01

What off-page SEO includes

Link building, earning links from relevant, credible sites, is the core activity, whether through digital PR, guest content, resource link outreach, or organic earned links from strong content. Local citations (consistent business listings across directories) matter heavily for local businesses. Unlinked brand mentions and review signals also feed into how search engines assess a brand's real-world reputation, even without a direct hyperlink.

02

Why authority is hard to fake

Search engines have spent two decades refining detection for manipulative link schemes, paid link networks, link farms, and reciprocal link exchanges built purely to game rankings. Sites caught using them face manual actions that can erase years of organic visibility overnight. Building real authority the slow way, through relevant, editorially earned links, is more work but does not carry that downside risk.

03

Why it matters for agencies

Off-page SEO is the most relationship-intensive and reputationally risky discipline in the SEO stack, and often the first piece an agency looks to outsource rather than build in-house, since it requires outreach relationships and editorial judgment that take years to develop. Conduit's link building for white label clients stays within search engine guidelines deliberately: a manual action against a client's site is far more expensive to recover from than any shortcut it might have saved, and it is the agency's name on the account when it happens.

The discipline that separates durable off-page SEO from a shortcut is patience: real placements take longer to earn and show up more slowly in rankings, but they do not disappear in the next algorithm update the way manipulative link schemes eventually do.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Is off-page SEO the same as link building?

Link building is the largest part of off-page SEO but not the whole of it. Citations, brand mentions, and review signals also count as off-page factors even without a direct backlink involved.

How many backlinks does a page need to rank?

There is no fixed number. What matters is the relevance and authority of the linking sites relative to competitors already ranking for that query, not a raw count.

Can a site recover from a link-related penalty?

Often, yes, through a disavow of bad links and a reconsideration request, but recovery takes months and rarely restores rankings fully to where they were. Avoiding manipulative link building in the first place is the cheaper path.
