Programmatic Advertising

Last updated September 2026

Programmatic advertising is the automated buying and placement of digital ad inventory through real-time bidding, replacing manual insertion orders with software that targets audiences and bids on individual impressions in milliseconds. It lets advertisers reach precise audiences across thousands of sites, apps, and streaming platforms without negotiating each placement by hand.

Before programmatic, buying a display ad meant calling a publisher, negotiating a rate, and locking in a fixed placement for a fixed price. Programmatic replaced that process with software: a demand-side platform bids on behalf of the advertiser, an ad exchange runs the auction, and a supply-side platform represents the publisher's inventory. The whole exchange happens before the page finishes loading.

01

How the auction works

Every time a person visits a site or app carrying programmatic inventory, that impression goes to auction. The advertiser's DSP evaluates the audience data attached to the impression, decides whether it matches the campaign's targeting, and submits a bid. The highest qualifying bid wins, and the ad renders, all in the time it takes a page to load, across billions of impressions a day.

02

Why agencies white label it

Programmatic requires a DSP seat, audience data, creative built to spec across formats, and someone watching pacing and viewability daily. Few agencies have the volume to justify staffing that in-house. Conduit runs programmatic as a white label channel: the agency keeps the client relationship and the strategy conversation, Conduit runs the buys, and the reporting ships under the agency's brand.

  1. 01

Reach across open web, apps, and streaming inventory the walled gardens (Google, Meta) do not sell.

  2. 02

Audience targeting by demographic, behavior, contextual category, or geography, layered together.

  3. 03

Useful for verticals like cannabis where paid social and search are restricted or banned.

  4. 04

Pairs naturally with OTT/CTV and geofencing for full-funnel reach.

03

What gets tracked

Programmatic's weak spot has always been attribution: a display ad rarely gets a direct click, so its influence shows up in view-through behavior and assisted conversions, not last-click reports. Conduit configures GA4 and Conversion Clarity before a programmatic campaign launches so view-through lift and downstream calls or form fills can actually be tied back to the channel that produced them.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Is programmatic the same as display advertising?

Display is a format; programmatic is a buying method. Programmatic can deliver display, video, OTT/CTV, and audio inventory, all through the same automated auction process.

How is programmatic priced?

Almost always CPM, cost per thousand impressions, since the buy happens at the impression level, not the click level. Rates vary by inventory quality and targeting specificity, from a few dollars CPM for open display to well over $30 for premium CTV.

Is programmatic worth it on a small budget?

Below a few thousand dollars a month, programmatic often struggles to generate enough impression volume for the algorithm to optimize meaningfully. It performs best layered into a broader mix, not run alone at minimal spend.
