Anchor Text

Last updated September 2026

Anchor text is the clickable, visible words in a hyperlink. Search engines read it as a clue about the linked page's topic, which makes the overall anchor text mix pointing at a page, exact-match, branded, generic, naked URL, a closely watched signal in SEO.

Anchor text is what a reader actually clicks: the underlined or colored words that carry the hyperlink. "Read our pricing guide" and "click here" can point to the exact same page, but they send a search engine very different signals about what that page is about, since one describes the destination and the other says nothing.

01

The types of anchor text

Exact-match anchor text uses the precise keyword a page targets. Partial-match uses a variation. Branded anchor text uses the company or product name. Generic anchor text uses non-descriptive phrases like "click here" or "learn more." Naked URL anchor text is just the raw web address pasted as the link. A healthy link profile tends to include a mix of all of these, weighted toward branded and natural phrasing rather than any one type dominating.

  1. 01

    Exact-match

    the precise target keyword

  2. 02

    Partial-match

    a variation or related phrase

  3. 03

Branded: the company or product name

  4. 04

Generic: "click here," "learn more," "this page"

  5. 05

    Naked URL

the raw web address as the link text

02

A backlink profile made up almost entirely of exact-match anchor text is one of the clearest signals of manipulative link building, since natural, editorially earned links rarely use the target keyword as anchor text every time. Search engines weight an unnatural anchor text concentration as a red flag, which means over-optimizing this single lever can actively work against a site rather than for it.

03

Why it matters for agencies

Internal link anchor text is a controllable, no-cost lever that agencies often overlook while focused entirely on chasing external links, even though it directly shapes how search engines understand a site's own page relationships. In external link building campaigns, Conduit monitors the anchor text distribution across earned links deliberately, since a natural, varied profile protects a client's rankings in a way that a wall of exact-match links cannot.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Is exact-match anchor text bad for SEO?

Not inherently, but an unnaturally high concentration of it across a backlink profile is a known spam signal search engines watch for. A small amount within a varied, natural mix is fine.

What is a natural anchor text ratio?

There is no universal number, but natural link profiles tend to be dominated by branded and generic anchors, with exact-match and partial-match making up a smaller share.

Does anchor text matter for internal links too?

Yes. Internal anchor text helps search engines understand the relationship between pages on the same site and is entirely within an agency's control to optimize.
