Lookalike Audience

Last updated September 2026

A lookalike audience is a group of new prospects an ad platform generates by matching the characteristics of an existing customer or visitor list against its broader user base. Instead of manually defining targeting criteria, the platform's algorithm finds people who resemble a proven audience, expanding reach into cold prospects at a higher starting relevance than generic targeting.

Terminology varies by platform. Meta calls this feature Lookalike Audiences. Google ran a comparable Similar Audiences feature for Display, deprecated in 2023 as signal availability shrank, and now leans on automated approaches like Optimized Targeting for equivalent expansion.

01

How the matching actually works

The platform analyzes a seed list, customers, site visitors, engaged users, for shared signals: demographic, behavioral, interest-based. It then scans its broader user base for people who share enough of those signals, at a similarity threshold the advertiser or platform sets, tighter for higher similarity and smaller reach, looser for broader reach and lower similarity.

02

What makes a strong seed list

  1. 01

An actual converter or high-value customer list beats a generic site-visitor list, since the algorithm can only find people who resemble what it is given

  2. 02

List size matters, too small and the platform cannot detect a reliable pattern

  3. 03

Recency matters, a stale list reflects an audience that may no longer resemble current buyers

  4. 04

A purchaser list outperforms an email-signup list for most matching purposes, since it reflects people who actually converted, not just people who expressed interest

03

Where this fits in a client's funnel

Lookalikes sit in the middle: colder than retargeting, which targets people who already engaged directly, and warmer than fully cold prospecting, which uses only demographic or interest targeting with no seed data at all. It is the standard way to scale a programmatic paid program past the size of an existing retargeting list without falling back to guesswork targeting.

The quality of the seed list is only as good as the data feeding it, which traces back to clean tracking: a CRM or Conversion Clarity-sourced customer list built on verified conversions produces a materially stronger lookalike than one built from unqualified form fills, and that distinction is part of why Conduit insists on GPS-verified tracking before scaling any paid program that leans on audience matching.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Is a lookalike audience the same as Google's Similar Audiences?

Related idea, different platform and status. Meta's Lookalike Audiences remain active and central to Meta ad strategy; Google deprecated Similar Audiences for Display in 2023 as part of a broader shift toward automated, privacy-safe targeting like Optimized Targeting.

How big should the seed list be?

Bigger and higher-quality beats bigger alone. Platforms generally want at least several hundred people in the seed list to detect a reliable pattern, but a smaller list of genuine purchasers usually outperforms a larger list of low-intent visitors.
